Importing stainless steel from India: documents, terms and ports

Buying stainless steel from India works best when the enquiry is specific. The clearer the specification, the faster the supplier can confirm stock, certification and shipping. This guide sets out what to state and what to expect.

What to include in an enquiry

• Grade (for example SS 202, 304, 316L, duplex)
• Product form: pipe, tube, bar, sheet, plate, coil, strip or fitting
• Dimensions: outside diameter and wall thickness or schedule, thickness and width, length
• Standard (ASTM, ASME, EN, DIN, JIS) and finish
• Quantity and unit
• Destination country and port, and the Incoterm you want
• Inspection requirements, including any third-party agency

Documents you should expect

• Mill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1, heat-traceable, showing chemical composition and mechanical properties
• EN 10204 3.2 with independent third-party inspection, where required
• Certificate of origin
• Commercial invoice and packing list
• Bill of lading or airway bill
• Insurance certificate where required

Incoterms and ports

We quote on FOB, CFR, CIF, EXW and DAP, and the quotation names the Incoterm and the port or place. Sea shipments leave principally from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) and Mumbai, with Mundra and Kandla also used depending on the shipment.

Packing

Export material is bundled and strapped with edge protection, with plastic end caps on pipe and tube, and packed in seaworthy wooden cases or pallets. VCI or moisture-barrier wrapping and customer-specified marking can be provided when you specify them.

Choosing the grade
