Metal weight calculator.

Theoretical weight for stainless steel, nickel alloy and common metals: pipe by NPS and schedule, tube, round, square, hex and flat bar, sheet and plate, angle, disc, ring and coil. Per piece, per metre and per square metre, in metric or imperial.

SS 304 / 304L · 7.93 g/cm³

Enter the dimensions and length to see the weight. Wall thickness must be less than half the diameter.

How this is calculated

Weight (kg) = cross-section area (mm²) × length (m) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1000. Round bar area is π × d² ÷ 4; pipe and round tube area is π × (OD − wall) × wall; square and rectangular tube area is the outer rectangle minus the inner rectangle; hex bar area is 0.866 × across-flats².

These are theoretical weights from nominal dimensions. Real material varies with mill tolerance on diameter, wall and thickness, and with the exact chemistry of the heat, so allow a small difference at weighing. Square and rectangular tube and angle ignore corner radii. Pipe schedule walls are the nominal values in ASME B36.10M and B36.19M.

Densities are the commonly published values for each grade. Use the custom density box if your specification or mill certificate gives a different figure.

Weight calculation questions

How do you calculate the weight of a stainless steel pipe?
Weight per metre in kg = π × (outside diameter − wall thickness) × wall thickness × density ÷ 1000, with diameter and wall in mm and density in g/cm³. For SS 304 (7.93 g/cm³), a 2 inch schedule 40S pipe (60.3 mm OD, 3.91 mm wall) weighs about 5.49 kg per metre.
What is the density of SS 202, 304 and 316?
Commonly published values are about 7.80 g/cm³ for SS 202, 7.93 for SS 304, and 7.98 to 7.99 for SS 316 and 316L. The calculator uses these, and lets you enter your own density if your certificate gives a different value.
How do you calculate the weight of a stainless steel sheet or plate?
Weight in kg = length (m) × width (m) × thickness (mm) × density (g/cm³). A 1 mm sheet of SS 304 weighs 7.93 kg per square metre.
How do you calculate the weight of a round bar?
Weight per metre in kg = π × diameter² ÷ 4 × density ÷ 1000, with diameter in mm. A 25 mm SS 304 round bar weighs about 3.89 kg per metre.
Is the calculated weight exact?
It is the theoretical weight from nominal dimensions. Real material varies with mill tolerance on diameter, wall and thickness, and with the exact chemistry of the heat, so a small difference at weighing is normal.
Does the calculator work for nickel alloys?
Yes. It includes Nickel 200, Monel 400, Inconel 600 and 625, Incoloy 825, and Hastelloy C22 and C276, plus carbon steel, aluminium, titanium, copper and brass.
