About Stainless Steel 202
Grade 202 (UNS S20200) is a chromium-manganese-nickel austenitic stainless steel. Manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel found in 304, which lowers the price and the exposure to nickel price swings, and gives a higher yield strength in the annealed condition. It takes a bright polish and forms well in tube and sheet, which is why it is widely used for kitchenware, furniture, decorative tube, interior architectural trim and appliance parts. Its corrosion resistance is lower than 304 and 316, so it belongs in dry, indoor and mildly humid service, not in coastal, chloride or chemical environments.
Designations and equivalents
Stainless Steel 202 is also designated UNS S20200, EN 1.4373, AISI 202, JIS SUS202 and Werkstoff X12CrMnNiN18-9-5.
SS 202 composition and mechanical properties
Per ASTM A240 for UNS S20200: carbon 0.15 max, manganese 7.50 – 10.00, silicon 1.00 max, phosphorus 0.060 max, sulphur 0.030 max, chromium 17.00 – 19.00, nickel 4.00 – 6.00 and nitrogen 0.25 max percent. Annealed mechanical limits: tensile strength 515 MPa minimum, yield strength (0.2% offset) 260 MPa minimum, elongation in 50 mm 40% minimum, hardness 95 HRB maximum (217 HBW). Confirm the composition on the mill test certificate supplied with the material.
Strengths and limitations
Strengths: Lower cost than 304, because manganese and nitrogen replace part of the nickel, Higher annealed yield strength than 304 (260 MPa minimum to ASTM A240), Takes a bright, even polish for decorative and appliance finishes and Forms and rolls well into tube, pipe and sheet products for indoor use. Limitations: Lower corrosion resistance than 304 and 316, Not suitable for coastal, outdoor-marine, chloride or chemical-process service, Poorer deep-drawing behaviour than 304 and Chemistry varies between mills, so confirm it against the mill test certificate.
Applications
kitchenware, cookware and utensils, decorative and architectural tube and trim for indoor use, furniture frames and railings in dry interiors, elevator, escalator and interior wall panels, domestic appliances and fittings and general dry fabrication where 304 is not required. Typical industries: plant engineering, automotive and electronics. We supply across India and export to markets in the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Asia, North America and South America.
