What information do you need to quote stainless steel round bar?

The details that decide the price and suitability of round bar: grade, size, tolerance, delivery condition and certificate.

Short answer: send the grade, the shape and diameter, the tolerance class, the delivery condition, the length and quantity, and the certificate you need. The delivery condition and tolerance matter as much as the grade, because they decide how the bar machines and what it costs.

The checklist

  • Grade, and the standard it must meet, for example ASTM A276 or A479.
  • Shape: round, square, hexagonal or threaded.
  • Diameter or across-flats size in millimetres.
  • Tolerance class.
  • Delivery condition: export bright, peeled or turned, cold drawn, centreless ground and polished, black or forged.
  • Length and quantity, and whether cut lengths are needed.
  • Heat treatment condition, if it matters for the part.
  • Certificate: EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2, and any marking you need.
  • How the bar will be machined, so the right condition and grade are suggested.

If the part is mostly machined, say so. A free-machining grade such as 303 can cut faster than 304, but it gives up some corrosion resistance, so it should be a deliberate choice.
