What is 17-4 PH?
17-4 PH is bought for strength, not corrosion resistance. Copper precipitates during a single low-temperature ageing treatment, so parts can be machined in the solution-annealed condition and then hardened with minimal distortion. The condition designation — H900 through H1150 — matters more than the grade name, because it sets the strength and toughness the part will actually have.
Designations
17-4 PH Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel is also designated UNS S17400, EN 1.4542, AISI 630, JIS SUS630 and Werkstoff X5CrNiCuNb16-4. Quote the designation your specification uses and we will supply to it.
Why choose 17-4 PH fasteners
Tensile strength above 1300 MPa in the H900 condition, Hardens with minimal dimensional change, Corrosion resistance broadly comparable to 304 and Machinable in the annealed condition before hardening. It is magnetic, with fair weldability and good machinability, and is used in continuous service in air up to about 315 °C.
Limitations to specify around
Magnetic in all conditions, Notch sensitive at the highest strength conditions, Not suitable for chloride service — no molybdenum and Hydrogen embrittlement risk if plated without bake-out. We state these plainly so the grade is chosen for the right service.
