01Sheet & Plate in South Africa

What South Africa buyers use sheet & plate for.

South Africa's demand comes from mining and minerals processing, automotive, food and wine, chemicals and construction. The country also produces stainless steel domestically.

Environment and grade choice

A dry inland plateau, a humid east coast around Durban, and a marine climate at the Cape. The same grade can last decades inland and corrode within years on the coast. Inland dry work can use 202 or 304; mining process, coastal and wine-industry service needs 316L, duplex or nickel alloy.

Standards in South Africa

SANS national standards exist, and ASTM and EN are widely used on imported material. Mining and process work may follow client specifications. Buyers in the region typically ask for pipe, tube, sheet and bar in 202, 304 and 316, with documentation that clears customs and meets project requirements.

02SS 202 sheet & plate

Sheet & Plate: what to know before you order.

Sheet is the thinner flat product, supplied cut to size in a stated surface finish. In SS 202 it is the form behind kitchen equipment, appliance panels, elevator and interior cladding, signage and decorative fabrication used indoors.

Sheet and plate cover everything from 0.3 mm decorative sheet to heavy plate for pressure vessel fabrication. The finish designation matters as much as the grade: 2B, No. 4 and BA behave very differently in service and in fabrication.

Why buyers choose SS 202 here

  • Surface appearance is the point of sheet, and 202 takes the standard finishes (2B, BA, No. 4, hairline and mirror) at a lower price than 304.
  • Higher annealed yield strength than 304 gives panels that resist denting a little better in thin gauge.
  • Cost savings are largest on high-area products such as cladding and panels, where sheet is bought by the square metre.

What to state in your enquiry

  • Protective film on one side or both for polished finishes
  • Quantity in sheets or kilograms
  • The standard and certificate required

FAQ

Sheet & Plate export to South Africa: questions answered

Durban or Cape Town for delivery?
Durban is the usual route for Johannesburg and the inland; Cape Town serves the Western Cape. We quote to the port you name.
Why import stainless steel where it is also made locally?
Local supply covers common products. Buyers import specific grades, forms, sizes and nickel alloys, so send the exact requirement.
What finishes can SS 202 sheet be supplied in?
The published finishes are No. 1, 2B, 2D, BA, No. 4, hairline, mirror (No. 8), matt and chequered. For polished finishes, ask for protective film so the surface survives handling.
Is SS 202 sheet good for kitchen equipment?
For dry, indoor kitchen furniture and equipment, yes. For surfaces in food contact or washdown with chloride cleaners, 304 or 316 is the safer specification.
How is sheet & plate shipped to South Africa?
By sea from Nhava Sheva (JNPT) or Mumbai to Durban or Cape Town. The quotation states the Incoterm and the named port, and quotations are typically returned the same working day. Call +91 79779 45282 or use the Request a Quote form.
