303 Round Bars

303 exists for one reason: to be machined fast. The sulphur addition forms manganese sulphide inclusions that break the chip, roughly doubling achievable cutting speeds over 304. Those same inclusions are corrosion initiation sites, so 303 trades corrosion resistance for productivity and should never be substituted into a corrosion-critical position.

What is 303?

Those same inclusions are corrosion initiation sites, so 303 trades corrosion resistance for productivity and should never be substituted into a corrosion-critical position.

Designations

Stainless Steel 303 is also designated UNS S30300, EN 1.4305, AISI 303, JIS SUS303, GB S30317 and Werkstoff X10CrNiS18-9. Quote the designation your specification uses and we will supply to it.

Why choose 303 round Bars

Roughly double the machining rate of 304, Excellent surface finish on turned parts and Ideal for high-volume automatic lathe work. It is non-magnetic, with requires-procedure weldability and excellent machinability, and is used in continuous service in air up to about 760 °C.

Limitations to specify around

Noticeably lower corrosion resistance than 304, Welding is not recommended — sulphur causes hot cracking, Not suitable for marine or food-contact service and Poor formability compared with 304. We state these plainly so the grade is chosen for the right service.
