254 SMO Stainless Steel Sheet: supplier, stockist and exporter in Mumbai, India
Rajgranth Metal & Alloys supplies 254 smo stainless steel sheet (UNS S31254) from Mumbai and exports it to 18 markets.
What is 254 SMO sheet?
Sheet is the thinner flat product, supplied cut to size in a stated surface finish, and heavier gauges are sold as plate to the same standard and range. 254 SMO sheet and plate are used for fabricated panels, equipment housings, tank shells and process equipment, where the finish and flatness matter as much as the grade. 254 SMO (UNS S31254, EN 1.4547) is a 6-molybdenum super-austenitic stainless steel with about 20 percent chromium, 18 percent nickel and 6 percent molybdenum, plus nitrogen. It was developed for seawater and bleach-plant duty, where ordinary stainless pits and crevice-corrodes within months.
6% molybdenum super-austenitic with nitrogen. PREN above 42.

Standards for 254 SMO sheet
254 SMO sheet is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Commonly specified product standards. Confirm the standard, edition and any supplementary requirements on your order; we supply to the standard you name.
Why buyers choose 254 SMO sheet
Very high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides
Higher strength than 316L or 904L
Good toughness and weldability for a high-alloy grade
Where 254 SMO sheet is used
- Seawater cooling and piping
- Pulp and paper bleach plants
- Flue gas desulphurisation
- Offshore and desalination equipment
- Chloride-bearing chemical process lines
What to state when you enquire for 254 SMO sheet
- Thickness in mm and sheet size, with width of 1000, 1219, 1500 or 2000 mm published
- Surface finish: 2B, BA, No. 4, hairline, mirror, matt or chequered
- Protective film on one side or both, for polished finishes
- Quantity in sheets or kilograms
- The standard and the test certificate required
- Whether sheets are to be cut to size
What to check on 254 SMO sheet before and after delivery
On 254 SMO sheet, look at flatness and surface in good light and at an angle, because finish defects on polished sheet show only that way. Check thickness against the order, and the heat number against the certificate. If the sheet will be formed or welded, tell us the process so we can say whether the grade and temper suit it. Grade limits to design around: costs significantly more than 316L and duplex and special welding filler and procedure are needed to keep corrosion resistance in the weld.
Export of 254 SMO sheet from India
254 SMO sheet is exported from Mumbai to 18 confirmed markets, quoted with the Incoterm and named port.
254 SMO compared with similar grades
Buyers who look at 254 SMO sheet usually also compare SS 904L and Super Duplex 2507. The grade pages below give each one's designations, properties and limits side by side so you can choose for the service rather than the price alone.
FAQ
09Questions answered
- What does 6Mo mean?
- It refers to the roughly 6 percent molybdenum content that gives 254 SMO and similar grades their very high pitting resistance.
- How does 254 SMO compare with super duplex 2507?
- Both resist chlorides very well. 2507 is stronger, so it allows thinner walls, while 254 SMO is austenitic and more tolerant of some fabrication routes.
- Is 254 SMO weldable?
- Yes, with suitable over-alloyed filler and procedure, so the weld keeps the corrosion resistance of the parent metal.
- What finishes can 254 SMO sheet be supplied in?
- The published finishes are No. 1, 2B, 2D, BA, No. 4, hairline, mirror (No. 8), matt and chequered. For polished finishes, ask for protective film.
- Which standard applies to 254 SMO sheet?
- 254 SMO sheet is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Confirm the standard and edition on your order.
- What is the minimum yield and tensile strength of 254 SMO?
- In the annealed condition, 254 SMO has a minimum yield strength of 300 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 650 MPa, per the standard named in the table above.
- What is the UNS number and EN designation of 254 SMO?
- 254 SMO Stainless Steel is designated UNS S31254 and EN 1.4547, and is also called SMO 254, 6Mo and S31254.
- What are the main alloying elements in 254 SMO?
- To the standard in the composition table, 254 SMO carries chromium 19.50 – 20.50, nickel 17.50 – 18.50 and molybdenum 6.00 – 6.50 percent by weight. Confirm the composition on the mill test certificate supplied with your material.
- Do you supply a mill test certificate with 254 SMO sheet?
- Yes, to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, showing chemistry and mechanical properties against the heat. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection is available on request.
