400 Series Coils

The 400 series covers ferritic grades such as 409 and 430, which are used where magnetic response and low cost matter more than corrosion resistance, and martensitic grades such as 410 and 420, which can be hardened by heat treatment for wear and cutting applications. Containing little or no nickel, they are considerably cheaper and more price-stable than austenitics.

What is 400 Series?

The 400 series covers ferritic grades such as 409 and 430, which are used where magnetic response and low cost matter more than corrosion resistance, and martensitic grades such as 410 and 420, which can be hardened by heat treatment for wear and cutting applications. Containing little or no nickel, they are considerably cheaper and more price-stable than austenitics.

Designations

400 Series Stainless Steel is also designated UNS S40900 / S41000 / S43000, EN 1.4512 / 1.4006 / 1.4016, AISI 409 / 410 / 420 / 430, JIS SUS410 / SUS430 and Werkstoff X6Cr17 / X12Cr13. Quote the designation your specification uses and we will supply to it.

Why choose 400 Series coils

Low cost and insulated from nickel price movement, Martensitic grades harden by heat treatment, Good resistance to chloride stress corrosion cracking and Magnetic, where that is a functional requirement. It is magnetic, with fair weldability and good machinability, and is used in continuous service in air up to about 815 °C.

Limitations to specify around

Lower general corrosion resistance than austenitics, Poor low-temperature toughness — ductile to brittle transition, Limited weldability, with grain growth in the heat-affected zone and Restricted formability relative to 304. We state these plainly so the grade is chosen for the right service.
