Stainless Steel 316 Pipe: manufacturer, stockist and exporter in Mumbai, India

Rajgranth Metal & Alloys supplies stainless steel 316 pipe (UNS S31600) from Mumbai and exports it to 18 markets.

01overview

What is SS 316 pipe?

Pipe is sized by nominal bore and schedule and is made to carry fluid or to act as structural section. SS 316 pipe is supplied welded or seamless depending on the duty: welded for general and larger-diameter lines, seamless where there must be no weld seam or the design code requires it. SS 316 (UNS S31600, EN 1.4401) adds 2 to 3 percent molybdenum to the 304 chemistry. The molybdenum lifts resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides, which is why 316 is the usual upgrade for coastal, marine-splash, chemical and pharmaceutical service.

304 plus 2–3% molybdenum. The standard answer to chlorides and mild acids.

Rajgranth Metal & Alloys lists SS 316 among the grades it supplies and exports from Mumbai.

06standards

Standards for SS 316 pipe

SS 316 pipe is commonly specified to ASTM A312 / ASME SA-312, ASTM A358 and ASTM A269. Commonly specified product standards. Confirm the standard, edition and any supplementary requirements on your order; we supply to the standard you name.

07why

Why buyers choose SS 316 pipe

Better chloride resistance than 304

Good resistance to many acids and process chemicals

Retains strength and toughness across a wide temperature range

08applications

Where SS 316 pipe is used

  • Marine and coastal equipment
  • Chemical and petrochemical process lines
  • Pharmaceutical and food equipment with chloride exposure
  • Heat exchangers
  • Surgical and medical parts
09specify

What to state when you enquire for SS 316 pipe

  • Nominal bore and schedule, or outside diameter and wall thickness
  • Seamless or welded
  • Length, with 5 m to 6.5 m the published stock range and longer to order
  • End condition: plain or bevelled
  • Surface condition: annealed and pickled, bright annealed or polished
  • The standard, and the test certificate required
10check

What to check on SS 316 pipe before and after delivery

On SS 316 pipe check the wall thickness against the schedule, the end preparation, and the heat number against the mill test certificate. For welded pipe, ask whether the weld seam has been dressed if the pipe is for exposed or polished use. Confirm that the pressure rating and design code your line is built to accept the grade and the pipe standard. Grade limits to design around: costs more than 304 because of the nickel and molybdenum and still not suitable for sustained seawater immersion or hot chloride service.

12alternatives

SS 316 compared with similar grades

Buyers who look at SS 316 pipe usually also compare SS 316L, SS 304 and SS 904L. The grade pages below give each one's designations, properties and limits side by side so you can choose for the service rather than the price alone.

FAQ

Questions answered

Is 316 worth the extra cost over 304?
Where chlorides are present, yes, since 304 can pit within months. In dry, clean indoor service the extra cost buys nothing.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L?
316L has at most 0.030 percent carbon against 0.08 percent in 316, which protects welds from sensitisation. Most mills now supply dual-certified material.
Can SS 316 be used in seawater?
It tolerates splash and light exposure but can pit under continuous immersion or at warm temperatures. Use super duplex or a nickel alloy for sustained seawater.
What is the difference between SS 316 pipe and tube?
Pipe is specified by nominal bore and schedule, which fixes the wall for each size. Tube is specified by actual outside diameter and wall thickness. If you have an outside diameter and a wall, you are normally buying tube.
Which standard applies to SS 316 pipe?
SS 316 pipe is commonly specified to ASTM A312 / ASME SA-312, ASTM A358 and ASTM A269. Confirm the standard and edition on your order.
What is the minimum yield and tensile strength of SS 316?
In the annealed condition, SS 316 has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa, per the standard named in the table above.
What is the UNS number and EN designation of SS 316?
Stainless Steel 316 is designated UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, AISI 316 and JIS SUS 316.
What are the main alloying elements in SS 316?
To the standard in the composition table, SS 316 carries chromium 16.00 – 18.00, nickel 10.00 – 14.00 and molybdenum 2.00 – 3.00 percent by weight. Confirm the composition on the mill test certificate supplied with your material.
Do you supply a mill test certificate with SS 316 pipe?
Yes, to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, showing chemistry and mechanical properties against the heat. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection is available on request.
