Stainless Steel 316 Sheet: manufacturer, stockist and exporter in Mumbai, India
Rajgranth Metal & Alloys supplies stainless steel 316 sheet (UNS S31600) from Mumbai and exports it to 18 markets.
What is SS 316 sheet?
Sheet is the thinner flat product, supplied cut to size in a stated surface finish, and heavier gauges are sold as plate to the same standard and range. SS 316 sheet and plate are used for fabricated panels, equipment housings, tank shells and process equipment, where the finish and flatness matter as much as the grade. SS 316 (UNS S31600, EN 1.4401) adds 2 to 3 percent molybdenum to the 304 chemistry. The molybdenum lifts resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides, which is why 316 is the usual upgrade for coastal, marine-splash, chemical and pharmaceutical service.
304 plus 2–3% molybdenum. The standard answer to chlorides and mild acids.
Rajgranth Metal & Alloys lists SS 316 among the grades it supplies and exports from Mumbai.

Standards for SS 316 sheet
SS 316 sheet is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Commonly specified product standards. Confirm the standard, edition and any supplementary requirements on your order; we supply to the standard you name.
Why buyers choose SS 316 sheet
Better chloride resistance than 304
Good resistance to many acids and process chemicals
Retains strength and toughness across a wide temperature range
Where SS 316 sheet is used
- Marine and coastal equipment
- Chemical and petrochemical process lines
- Pharmaceutical and food equipment with chloride exposure
- Heat exchangers
- Surgical and medical parts
What to state when you enquire for SS 316 sheet
- Thickness in mm and sheet size, with width of 1000, 1219, 1500 or 2000 mm published
- Surface finish: 2B, BA, No. 4, hairline, mirror, matt or chequered
- Protective film on one side or both, for polished finishes
- Quantity in sheets or kilograms
- The standard and the test certificate required
- Whether sheets are to be cut to size
What to check on SS 316 sheet before and after delivery
On SS 316 sheet, look at flatness and surface in good light and at an angle, because finish defects on polished sheet show only that way. Check thickness against the order, and the heat number against the certificate. If the sheet will be formed or welded, tell us the process so we can say whether the grade and temper suit it. Grade limits to design around: costs more than 304 because of the nickel and molybdenum and still not suitable for sustained seawater immersion or hot chloride service.
Export of SS 316 sheet from India
SS 316 sheet is exported from Mumbai to 18 confirmed markets, quoted with the Incoterm and named port.
SS 316 compared with similar grades
Buyers who look at SS 316 sheet usually also compare SS 316L, SS 304 and SS 904L. The grade pages below give each one's designations, properties and limits side by side so you can choose for the service rather than the price alone.
FAQ
09Questions answered
- Is 316 worth the extra cost over 304?
- Where chlorides are present, yes, since 304 can pit within months. In dry, clean indoor service the extra cost buys nothing.
- What is the difference between 316 and 316L?
- 316L has at most 0.030 percent carbon against 0.08 percent in 316, which protects welds from sensitisation. Most mills now supply dual-certified material.
- Can SS 316 be used in seawater?
- It tolerates splash and light exposure but can pit under continuous immersion or at warm temperatures. Use super duplex or a nickel alloy for sustained seawater.
- What finishes can SS 316 sheet be supplied in?
- The published finishes are No. 1, 2B, 2D, BA, No. 4, hairline, mirror (No. 8), matt and chequered. For polished finishes, ask for protective film.
- Which standard applies to SS 316 sheet?
- SS 316 sheet is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Confirm the standard and edition on your order.
- What is the minimum yield and tensile strength of SS 316?
- In the annealed condition, SS 316 has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa, per the standard named in the table above.
- What is the UNS number and EN designation of SS 316?
- Stainless Steel 316 is designated UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, AISI 316 and JIS SUS 316.
- What are the main alloying elements in SS 316?
- To the standard in the composition table, SS 316 carries chromium 16.00 – 18.00, nickel 10.00 – 14.00 and molybdenum 2.00 – 3.00 percent by weight. Confirm the composition on the mill test certificate supplied with your material.
- Do you supply a mill test certificate with SS 316 sheet?
- Yes, to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, showing chemistry and mechanical properties against the heat. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection is available on request.
