01overview

What is SS 316 coil?

Coil is flat-rolled material supplied wound on a core, for processors who slit, blank or roll-form it. SS 316 coil is bought by tube mills, press shops and fabricators that need continuous feedstock. SS 316 (UNS S31600, EN 1.4401) adds 2 to 3 percent molybdenum to the 304 chemistry. The molybdenum lifts resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chlorides, which is why 316 is the usual upgrade for coastal, marine-splash, chemical and pharmaceutical service.

304 plus 2–3% molybdenum. The standard answer to chlorides and mild acids.

Rajgranth Metal & Alloys lists SS 316 among the grades it supplies and exports from Mumbai.

06standards

Standards for SS 316 coil

SS 316 coil is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Commonly specified product standards. Confirm the standard, edition and any supplementary requirements on your order; we supply to the standard you name.

07why

Why buyers choose SS 316 coil

Better chloride resistance than 304

Good resistance to many acids and process chemicals

Retains strength and toughness across a wide temperature range

08applications

Where SS 316 coil is used

  • Chemical and petrochemical process lines
  • Pharmaceutical and food equipment with chloride exposure
  • Heat exchangers
  • Surgical and medical parts
09specify

What to state when you enquire for SS 316 coil

  • Thickness in mm, 0.3 mm to 8 mm published, and width, 100 mm to 2000 mm published
  • Coil inner diameter: 508 mm or 610 mm
  • Coil weight, or the maximum your uncoiler takes
  • Surface finish and whether film is required
  • Edge: mill edge or slit edge
  • The standard and the test certificate required
10check

What to check on SS 316 coil before and after delivery

On SS 316 coil, check edge condition, camber and coil set on the first delivery, since these decide how the material runs on your line. Confirm the inner diameter and coil weight against your uncoiler before ordering, and the certificate chemistry, because a whole production run inherits it. Grade limits to design around: costs more than 304 because of the nickel and molybdenum and still not suitable for sustained seawater immersion or hot chloride service.

11export

Export of SS 316 coil from India

SS 316 coil is exported from Mumbai to 18 confirmed markets, quoted with the Incoterm and named port.

12alternatives

SS 316 compared with similar grades

Buyers who look at SS 316 coil usually also compare SS 316L, SS 304 and SS 904L. The grade pages below give each one's designations, properties and limits side by side so you can choose for the service rather than the price alone.

FAQ

09

Questions answered

Is 316 worth the extra cost over 304?
Where chlorides are present, yes, since 304 can pit within months. In dry, clean indoor service the extra cost buys nothing.
What is the difference between 316 and 316L?
316L has at most 0.030 percent carbon against 0.08 percent in 316, which protects welds from sensitisation. Most mills now supply dual-certified material.
Can SS 316 be used in seawater?
It tolerates splash and light exposure but can pit under continuous immersion or at warm temperatures. Use super duplex or a nickel alloy for sustained seawater.
What coil sizes of SS 316 do you supply?
The published range is thickness from 0.3 mm to 8 mm and width from 100 mm to 2000 mm, on a coil inner diameter of 508 mm or 610 mm. Send the requirement and we confirm.
Which standard applies to SS 316 coil?
SS 316 coil is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Confirm the standard and edition on your order.
What is the minimum yield and tensile strength of SS 316?
In the annealed condition, SS 316 has a minimum yield strength of 205 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa, per the standard named in the table above.
What is the UNS number and EN designation of SS 316?
Stainless Steel 316 is designated UNS S31600, EN 1.4401, AISI 316 and JIS SUS 316.
What are the main alloying elements in SS 316?
To the standard in the composition table, SS 316 carries chromium 16.00 – 18.00, nickel 10.00 – 14.00 and molybdenum 2.00 – 3.00 percent by weight. Confirm the composition on the mill test certificate supplied with your material.
Do you supply a mill test certificate with SS 316 coil?
Yes, to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, showing chemistry and mechanical properties against the heat. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection is available on request.
