01overview

What is SS 304L coil?

Coil is flat-rolled material supplied wound on a core, for processors who slit, blank or roll-form it. SS 304L coil is bought by tube mills, press shops and fabricators that need continuous feedstock. SS 304L (UNS S30403, EN 1.4307) is the low-carbon version of 304, with 0.030 percent carbon at most. The lower carbon keeps chromium carbides from forming at the grain boundaries when thick sections are welded, so it keeps its corrosion resistance in the as-welded condition without a post-weld anneal.

Rajgranth Metal & Alloys lists SS 304L among the grades it supplies and exports from Mumbai.

06standards

Standards for SS 304L coil

SS 304L coil is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Commonly specified product standards. Confirm the standard, edition and any supplementary requirements on your order; we supply to the standard you name.

07why

Why buyers choose SS 304L coil

Resists intergranular corrosion after welding

Same formability and general corrosion resistance as 304

Suits welded tanks, pipe and vessels

08applications

Where SS 304L coil is used

  • Welded pipe and tube for process lines
  • Tanks and vessels in food and chemical plants
  • Heat-exchanger shells
  • Pharmaceutical equipment in mild service
  • Thick-section welded fabrication
09specify

What to state when you enquire for SS 304L coil

  • Thickness in mm, 0.3 mm to 8 mm published, and width, 100 mm to 2000 mm published
  • Coil inner diameter: 508 mm or 610 mm
  • Coil weight, or the maximum your uncoiler takes
  • Surface finish and whether film is required
  • Edge: mill edge or slit edge
  • The standard and the test certificate required
10check

What to check on SS 304L coil before and after delivery

On SS 304L coil, check edge condition, camber and coil set on the first delivery, since these decide how the material runs on your line. Confirm the inner diameter and coil weight against your uncoiler before ordering, and the certificate chemistry, because a whole production run inherits it. Grade limits to design around: slightly lower strength than 304 and shares 304's weakness in chloride environments.

11export

Export of SS 304L coil from India

SS 304L coil is exported from Mumbai to 18 confirmed markets, quoted with the Incoterm and named port.

12alternatives

SS 304L compared with similar grades

Buyers who look at SS 304L coil usually also compare SS 304 and SS 316L. The grade pages below give each one's designations, properties and limits side by side so you can choose for the service rather than the price alone.

Questions answered

What is the difference between 304 and 304L?
Carbon. 304L holds it to 0.030 percent against 0.07 percent in 304, which protects welds from sensitisation. Strength is slightly lower, and many mills supply dual-certified 304/304L.
Is 304L stronger than 304?
No. Its minimum yield strength to ASTM A240 is 170 MPa against 205 MPa for 304.
When must I use 304L instead of 304?
When thick sections will be welded and not annealed afterwards, or when the service can attack sensitised grain boundaries.
What coil sizes of SS 304L do you supply?
The published range is thickness from 0.3 mm to 8 mm and width from 100 mm to 2000 mm, on a coil inner diameter of 508 mm or 610 mm. Send the requirement and we confirm.
Which standard applies to SS 304L coil?
SS 304L coil is commonly specified to ASTM A240 / ASME SA-240 and ASTM A480. Confirm the standard and edition on your order.
What is the minimum yield and tensile strength of SS 304L?
In the annealed condition, SS 304L has a minimum yield strength of 170 MPa and a minimum tensile strength of 485 MPa, per the standard named in the table above.
What is the UNS number and EN designation of SS 304L?
Stainless Steel 304L is designated UNS S30403, EN 1.4307, AISI 304L and JIS SUS 304L.
What are the main alloying elements in SS 304L?
To the standard in the composition table, SS 304L carries chromium 17.50 – 19.50 and nickel 8.00 – 12.00 percent by weight. Confirm the composition on the mill test certificate supplied with your material.
Do you supply a mill test certificate with SS 304L coil?
Yes, to EN 10204 3.1 as standard, showing chemistry and mechanical properties against the heat. EN 10204 3.2 with third-party inspection is available on request.
